This report contains the results of agricultural surveys undertaken in respect of 1994, 1995 and 1996 for the Republic of South Africa. The information concerns commercial farming units, excluding the former TBVC states and self-governing territories. The purpose of the surveys was to collect useful information for national and provincial planning, development, policy formulation and marketing. The report gives a breakdown of principal agricultural statistics such as the number of farming units, employment, salaries and wages, total gross income, expenditure and debt according to the nine provinces.

  • Employment: Regular Employees, Casual and Seasonal Employees, Africans/Blacks, Coloureds, Indians/Asians, Whites
  • Employee Remuneration: Cash Wages, Salaries and Cash Bonuses: Africans/Blacks, Coloureds, Indians/Asians, Whites
  • Gross Income from Agricultural Products:  Field Crop Products, Horticultural Products, Animals and Animal Products (Milk and Cream, Wool Pelts/Fur Mohair, Poultry and Poultry Products, Game Breeding and Hunting, Fish Breeding and Fishing), Forestry Products
  • Total Expenditures:  Current, Capital, Equipment Purchased (New, Used), New Buildings Erected, New Development Work Undertaken
  • Market Value of Farming Assets:  Land and Improvements, Vehicles/Machinery/Equipment and Tools, Animals and Poultry, Other Farming Assets
  • Farming Debt

Crops: Summer Cereals, Winter Cereals, Oil-seeds, Sugar Cane, Wine Grapes, Deciduous Fruit, Subtropical Fruit, Citrus Fruit, Potatoes and Vegetables, Horticultural Products
