The Department of Agricultural Economics, Extension and Rural Development at the University of Pretoria continues to support a long-standing effort led by Frikkie Liebenberg to develop a consistent set of input, output and productivity accounts for South African Agriculture. InSTePP remains actively involved in this effort, which is reaching beyond South Africa to include similar efforts for other countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The devil is definitely in the data details when developing meaningful measures of labor, capital, or other input use in agriculture. Careful attention is being given to maintaining consistency in the underlying data and applying modern methods of aggregation so that the resulting estimates can be meaningfully compared among countries and over time.
